What is graphic design? |

Most people are oblivious to graphic design, yet it influences all of us regularly. Think of all the visual information you receive every day - things like highway signage; maps; universal signage symbols such as those for washrooms and elevators; food, drug and cosmetic packaging and their accompanying instructions and information; television broadcasts and movies; business signs; newspapers, books and magazines; posters; advertising materials and web sites. Every facet of visual information involves graphic design - successful or otherwise!
Graphic design is a diverse profession and graphic designers tend to work anonymously behind the scenes. As a result, few people really know what graphic design is. The Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario defines the profession as " an interdiscliplinary, problem-solving activity which combines visual sensitivity with skill and knowledge in the areas of communications, technology and business. Graphic practitioners specialize in the structuring and organizing of visual information to aid communication and orientation."
An important consideration for professional graphic designers and their clients is the planning of comprehensive design solutions which will provide the most efficient means of utilizing a variety of visual communications.
